Iridescent Ocean Bowl

ca 1910

About

Created soon after the ceramic quartet left Clement Massier’s employ, the newly formed BACS studio on the French Cote d’Azure clearly understood the dramatic effects of sunlight. The bowl’s lusterware surface dazzles as the school of fish on the outer ring shimmers in iridescent luminosity, and the nearly acidic colors of sea life pulsate in rhythmic time to the ocean current. Blistered pearl-like bubbles in the glazed surface add textural dimension and demonstrate Jean Barol’s mastery of the medium, fully integrating this astounding affect to become the centers of sea anemones. JEAN BAROL (1873-1966) A glaze specialist, Jean Barol trained under Clement Massier in his Golfe Juan studio in southern France. Together with three of his colleagues: Maurice Alexandre; Jean Carle and Francois Sicard, they broke away in 1912 to form their own workshop, BACS, whose name was formed as an acronym by using the first letter of each of their names. In the 15 years that the BACS workshop was in production, Barol took sabbaticals periodically to work at the Faiencerie Picard in Amiens, returning briefly to BACS in 1916 before leaving with Sicard the following year to become the first Artistic Director of Montieres in Amiens under Desire Borck. For the next three years while in Amiens, Barol also taught ceramic techniques to students at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts. He returned to the BACS studio in the south of France in 1920 where he produced ceramic glazes until the firm closed permanently in 1927. Until his death in 1966, Barol continued his ceramics work in nearby Cannes-La Bocca and in his native Vallauris.
