Artist Comments
This was the first of a half dozen large paintings done from life of Angela. She was wearing a kimono during her breaks, but it was such a beautiful color, I decided to paint her wearing it. In this painting, I was consciously only putting pieces of paint where they needed to be and nowhere else. I was not ;filling in; the rest of the canvas or embellishing things I did not see. I left the history of the initial failed attempts as part of the final painting.
About the Artist
Contemporary portraitist Geoffrey Stein left his job as a New York litigator over 15 years ago to pursue his creative passions. After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, Geoffrey returned to New York with a new career: that of an artist. Based in a bright Garment District studio, Geoffrey creates portraits mostly from life, or from reference images he clips from magazines or his own photographs. Collage and layering are major components of the work. Varying degrees of abstraction within Geoffrey’s oeuvre set a range of emotional tones. “For me, there has always been a tension between the verbal and the visual,” he says. “I paint because I do not have words for the things the paintings are about.”

Artist Diana Chelaru paints colorful expressionist interpretations of human emotion. “Art is a means of communication, it is how I express my thoughts, hopes, regrets, and joys,†says Diana. She experiments with working on large-scale paintings using the visual language of form, lines, and color to create compositions that exist only in her imagination. Growing up in Romania, she draws inspiration from Byzantine mosaics as well as Gustav Klimt’s subject matter and use of decorative patterns. She received her BFA in Painting from George Enescu Art University and finished her MA in Art History from Queens College. Diana simply goes with the flow rather than dwelling on the formulaic process. It all depends on how and what she feels at the moment.
