Carlo Belli
Letter by Carlo Belli to the Countess Pecci Blunt - 1966

1966

About the Item

L.A.S. addressed to Countess Letizia Pecci Blunt. Bolzano, September 21, 1966. 1 page 20x29 cm in perfect condition with envelope and postmark, size 16x11 cm. Theorist and critic of art, journalist, writer, musicologist and - less known business - even a painter and a ceramist, Carlo Belli had a prominent position in the artistic debate of the 1930s. He is renowned for his book of the 1935, considered the Italian manifesto of abstractism and defined by Kandinsky as "the gospel of abstract art". So the polyvalent man of culture wrote to theorize the absolute need for essence, of an almost aseptic abstract purism. Painting is what "comes from the combination (K) of color with the shape: K has N aspects". For Belli, simple algebraic indications K, K1, K2 are sufficient because "the I abolition is necessary because the law of man is the earth, but the law of the earth is heaven, and the law of heaven is the Tao. Art is the freedom from the eternal humanity. " He is also famous for his interest in Southern Italy, coupled with his passion for ancient history and archeology, that will lead him in 1960 to think about the first Study Conference for Magna Grecia. In the letter addressed to Pecci Blunt says he is leaving for Salerno to attend a convention of Cardinal Siri.
