Contemporary Mixed Media

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon. In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. Large Scale 1980s Laser Holography, Cvetkovich Organic Hologram Collage
By Tom Cvetkovich
Located in Surfside, FL
In this holographic collage the artist, and inventor Thomas Cvetkovich uses a method of recording an object image of a first hologram as a second hologram is provided. This holographic method is known as compact holographic human interface, and was invented by him. Reconstructed images of holograms, in this case a fish, a banyan leaf and flora and fauna abstract forms, generally become visible when illuminated by a source of light having an angle of reconstruction. Thse are created with laser and computer technology. An artile in Life magazine was all it took it took to influence Tom Cvetkovich's career path, one that has brought his Youngstown company, Chromagem, an international clientele. It focused on new technology that linked the use of lasers in producing holograms, three-dimensional and free-standing images. Reminiscing on Chromagem's past work, Cvetkovich said, One of the things we're most proud of is a series of U.S. postage stamps, achievement in space. We did three stamps for that. We've done postage stamps for Canada, the German government. We've also done work for Moet & Chandon, the champagne; Estee Lauder; and the cover of the 'Star Trek Generations' box set. Over the past two Christmases, Chromagem created a special variety of Reynolds Wrap that features snowflake holograms stamped on the entire roll. Cvetkovich created his first hologram when he was a student at Kent State University in 1974. He took science and art classes to gain the knowledge on how to make the creations running through his head and onto a sketchpad into a fully realized form. "I'm coming at it, primarily, from an art background, but with some science background." He continued his studies at Lake Forest College. It was the first place in the world to offer a workshop in holography. I was there for their third year. Combining art, science Next, he earned a master's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. The Art Institute was just starting a holography lab. Actually, I had to build my own because theirs wasn't ready. When I was going to college, I would do a math class and then make art. I could tell I was using different parts of my brain. Over the years, Cvetkovich has developed a mental truce between the creative and scientific sides of his brain. At this point, it's more of a craft, he said. I don't rely on a lot of math or science at all. I try to keep abreast at what's being invented, what new...

Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Modern Subject: Abstract Medium: Mixed Media Surface: Paper Country: United States Dimensions: 18" x 45" Dimensions w/Frame: 24 3/4" x 51 1/2" Working primarily with structural, architectural and still life subject matter, Kepets goes far beyond the simple depiction of his material. Complex and engaging, his work transforms familiar objects into highly evocative abstractions. Kepets renders precise and patterned close-ups by utilizing meticulous highlighting and shadow effects. This creates a feeling of three dimensional space in his carefully observed architectural and still life details. Focusing attention on the intricacies of each object, Kepets uses his sharply cropped compositions to express the sheer beauty of shapes and forms. He constantly plays with formal notions of surface flatness...

“The Dance Lesson”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original media media of watercolor, gouache and oil pastel on archival paper by the master pastel artist, Frank Frederico. Circa 1980. Signed by the artist top left. Condition is excellent. The subject is a children’s dance class with rich, vibrant colors. The artwork is housed in a thin brass toned metal frame with linen liner. UV clear plexiglass protects the artwork. Overall framed measurements are 26.25 by 38.25 inches. Provenance: Sarasota, Florida estate. Frank Federico ” I believe that art is as capricious as nature’s own whims. It is as permanent as the endless striving for universal harmony, but In a constant flux. My technique is varied with mood and empathy for the subject matter or motif. Nature provides the catalyst — human or otherwise — with this constant flux of rhythms, shapes and boundless energy. Each painting speaks for itself and has a life of its own. I am the stoker of energy, the catalyzer.” Artists Awards 2002: 2nd Prize, Louisiana Watercolor Society Annual National Exhibition; The Great American Art Works Fantastic Award, Pastel Society of North Florida Annual; 2001: Jack Richeson Award, Pastel Society of Painters on Cape Cod International Exhibit; Daler Rowney Gift Certificate, CPS Eighth Annual National Renaissance in Pastel; President’s Solo Exhibit Award, Kent Art Association. 2000: J. Frida Kahlo Portrait
Located in Paris, FR
Very charming French mixed media portrait by Frida Khalo's iconic painter with a beautiful frame and a composition of glass and brenchs. On a great natural paper contour where you the can see its texture. Elegant colors. Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in the house of her parents, known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House), in Coyoacan. Frida always claimed to be born on 1910, the year of the outbreak of the Mexican revolution, so that people could directly associate her with the modern Mexico. This detail well introduces us to a singular personality, characterized since her childhood by a deep sense of independence and rebellion against ordinary social and moral habits, moved by passion and sensuality, proud of her "Mexicanidad" and cultural tradition set against the reigning Americanization: everything mixed with a peculiar sense of humour. Her life was marked by physical suffering, started with the polio contracted at the age of five and worsen by her life-dominating event occurred in 1925. A bus accident caused severe injuries to her body owing to a pole that pierced her from the stomach to the pelvis. The medicine of her time tortured her body with surgical operations (32 throughout her life), corsets of different kinds and mechanical "stretching" systems. Lots of her works were painted laying in the bed. Drawing on personal experiences, her miscarriages, and her numerous operations, Kahlo's works are often characterized by portrayals of pain. Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. As a young artist, Kahlo approached the famous Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, who recognized her talent and her unique expression as truly special and uniquely Mexican. He encouraged her development as an artist and soon began an intimate relationship with Frida. They were married in 1929, despite the disapproval of Frida's mother, divorced and then remarried in 1940. She had also a lot of lovers, men and women, such as Leon...

Large Photo Collage Miami Beach Art Deco Neon Architectural Photograph Cuban Art
Located in Surfside, FL
Large original, vintage, Ektacolor print collage Depicts art deco architectural facade of Publix building at Dade Boulevard and Alton Road in Miami Beach, Florida. Multiple prints formed into a collage mounted on a stretched canvas. Printed November 1989. Mounted December 1989. dated lower left. Includes protective canvas slip covering. Size: 81"H x 72"W (205.74 cm x 182.88 cm). Provenance: Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida This was exhibited at the Norton Museum in Palm Beach and Bears their exhibition label verso. Rafael Salazar (Cuban- American photographer) was born in Cuba in 1945 and has been a South Florida resident since 1965. He has photographed the development of the City of Miami as well as Miami’s budding art scene over the years. He is primarily known for his panoramic photographs and photo assemblage montages which have both a documentary quality to them but are full of enchantment and depth. Of great importance to him is the preservation on film of art works, especially those of a transitory nature, this has led him to photograph two of Christo and Jeanne-Claude projects; Miami’s Surrounded Islands and the Pont Neuf in Paris. He has also documented the works of Fernando García, Ed Ruscha, and Philip Johnson. His work draws inspiration from his love of the cosmos, spirituality, architecture, Eastern philosophy, and nature. He has close ties with the Miami-Dade Public Library System and photographed much of the development of Main Library as well as the early exhibitions and events held there. He photographed the library’s Artmobile, painted by New York Realist artist Lowell Nesbitt, an art gallery on wheels decorated with zebra patterns and native flowers that was in service from 1976 until 1992. He also documented the Grand Opening Celebration of the Metro-Dade Cultural Center held in 1986. Since its 1970 start, the Permanent Art Collection has been recognized nationally as a fearless reflection of Miami’s diversity, and an invaluable chronicle of its artistic and social history. Minimalist Black Oil Painting, Collage, Mixed Media on Canvas Kevin Larmon
Located in Surfside, FL
Kevin Larmon, (American, b. 1955), 1985-1986, oil on canvas; hand signed, titled, and dated on the reverse Provenance: bear a Curt Marcos Gallery label verso This is one of a pair we are offering for sale Kevin Larmon (1955-) is an American artist and was assistant monitor of painting at Syracuse University. Kevin Larmon was born in Syracuse, New York in 1955. He grew up on a small horse farm. Larmon's mother was a school secretary while his father was a construction worker. He graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City as an undergraduate senior, where he finished his schooling at the New York Studio School. In the late 1970s, Larmon played guitar for Mudmen, a three piece band in the East Village of New York City with Craig Gillis playing bass, Mike Caffes playing drums, and percussionist Jill Burkhart. Mudmen played in venues such as CBGB, Danceteria, A7 (bar), Pyramid Club, Mudd Club, and The Limelight. Larmon started making still life paintings in 1979. He has also worked with atmospheric drawings and paintings since 1989, many of which are made on canvas or wood. In 2009, he began to paint his cell paintings. Larmon's paintings are built up through layers of collage and paint. Most famously, Larmon's work includes collages of gay male pornography that have been painted over with images that exist somewhere in between abstraction and form. These images are often anatomical. Conceptually, Larmon's work deals with issues such as the male body image and fascist culture. Similarly, Larmon's drawings on wood deal with ambiguously anatomical and abstracted forms. His work has been associated with the post-conceptualism and neo-conceptual art movements, which were prominent aspects of exhibitions at Gallery Nature Morte and with Tricia Collins and Richard Milazzo shaping the nature of painting after the rise of conceptual art. Larmon was also associated with Feature Inc., a gallery that was first established in Chicago in 1984. In August 1988, the gallery's director, known as Hudson, moved Feature Inc. to New York City. Larmon's first exhibition with Feature Inc. occurred in 1987 in Chicago, Illinois. Over the years, Hudson and Larmon would work together on many exhibitions. As a young artist, Larmon spent his Thursdays working to sustain Gallery Nature Morte together with the gallery owners, Alan Becher and Peter Nagy, when the gallery existed in New York City. Larmon was heavily influenced by his contemporaries at Gallery Nature Morte such as Robin Weglinski, Joel Otterson, and Steven Parrino. Other influential artists include Oliver Wasow, Robert Gober, Nancy Shaver, Carter Hodgkin, and Steven Wolfe. Larmon also drew inspiration from Rembrandt, Giorgio Morandi, Jackson Pollock, and Agnes Martin. During his time as a professor at Syracuse University, Larmon made an impact on many emerging artists including Deborah Roberts and Paul Weiner. Larmon participated in Aperto 86 at the 1986 Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy, where his paintings were exhibited at the Corderie at the Arsenal. From 1983–2013, Larmon was invited to exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York; Feature Inc, New York, New York; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; the University Art Museum at the University of California, Berkeley; the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Visual Arts Museum, New York, New York; the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey; Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, now the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, Colorado; Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, New Jersey; and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2013, Larmon was included in a group show at the Leslie Sacks Gallery in Los Angeles, California alongside artists Christo, Jim Dine, Pablo Picasso, Chuck Close, Howard Hodgkin, Jasper Johns, Marino Marini, Henri Matisse, Karel Nel, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, and Sebastião Salgado. Exhibitions curated by Tricia Collins and Richard Milazzo Still Life With Transaction: Former Objects, New Moral Arrangements, and the History of Surfaces took place at International with Monument in New York from March 28 – April 21, 1984. Larmon was accompanied by artists Alice Albert, Ericka Beckman, Alan Belcher, Ross Bleckner, Barry Bridgwood, Sarah Charlesworth, Wendy Galavitz, Judy Geib, Jim Jacobs, Stephen Lack, Andrew Masullo, Peter McCaffrey, Jan Mohlman, Peter Nadin, Peter Nagy, Joel Otterson, Richard Prince, Steven Parrino, Tyler Turkle, and Laurie Simmons.
