Salvador DalíLe Creuset Philosophal - L'Alchimie des Philosophes - Salvador Dalì - Modern Art
Le Creuset Philosophal is a superb etching with drypoint, lithograph, silkscreen, and collage on parchment by Salvador Dalí. Hand-signed in black pencil on the lower right margin. Hand-numbered in Arab numerals on the lower right. Edition of 225 prints. In excellent conditions, including two zircons (one is white, the other is blue). Some usual folds. Realized in 1976 by the elderly Catalan artist, this wonderful plate is from "L'Alchimie des Philosophes" (Alchemy of the Philosophers), a portfolio of 10 drypoint etchings with lithography and silkscreen printing including various alchemical writings realized over 1500 years. The etchings were reworked in drypoint by Dalí. The whole edition includes 275 specimens with the first group of 50 prints in Roman numerals, and the last 225 in Arab numerals. Designed by Yves and Ariane Lancell Gauguet, Alchemie des philosophes brings together ancient alchemical texts and manuscripts in unpublished original translations in French and English. Chinese, Indian, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Western philosophies are represented by these key texts. Dalí's book is designed to be easily consulted in spipte of its large size, thanks to the box specially designed for this purpose. It is an edition in the form of a book-object or an artist's book (proposed in a box, resembling two volumes, which contain the sheets, the "loose" boards, and an "alchemical wheel", filled with mercury): an exemplary work for the diversity of techniques, for the author's skills, and for the exceptional intuitions of artistic experimentation. The mature Dalí meditates on the principle of alchemy, which is based on the idea of natural metamorphosis, i.e. the belief that all metals would end up turning into gold after millions of years. What nature can only improve after a long period of time, the human being can realize through his art, and in a very short time! This is the incredible myth of Dalí!
