Mars takes inspiration for his pieces from quilting patterns, a subtle nod to his fascination with folk culture of the 1950s. He has forged a distinct genre of folk-laced pop art, successfully merging the iconic American pop art aesthetics with traditional folk art designs. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, Mars has built a career on his unyielding interest in pop-culture icons, traditional quilting techniques, and the classic ‘Americana’. Images of celebrities such as Elvis, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren and Marilyn Monroe are pasted over quilt-like patterns created with layers of vintage magazine clippings and finished with a glistening UV resin coating. His artworks exude a bright, lively energy that playfully reminds his viewers of the brilliance of America’s past and ignites hope for the future. The relationship between celebrity, tradition, and consumerism is an on-going exploration throughout Mars’ work; a relationship that still defines main-stream American culture today. Robert Mars currently works from his studio in Connecticut where his unique artworks take shape with layers of history, vivid color and glossy finishes all crafted by hand.
