"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel
Located in Soquel, CA
"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel Dramatic abstract composition by Michele King (American, b. 1962). This piece resembles a nebula, with swirling texture and subtle variations in color. Although the piece appears to be mostly black, there are a variety of colors that peek through the top layer. A layer of high gloss varnish creates a nearly iridescent quality to the piece, and the colors shift subtly depending on the viewing angle. Signed "Michele King" on verso. No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Board size: 24"H x 24"W Michele King (American, b. 1962) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to California in the 1990s. She attended Virginia Tech and Harvard, where she earned her MPA. She pursued graduate studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Her work is focused on “memory, the future, and ways in which perception is shaped through a combination of reality and imagination.” King’s process involves layering of various media, creating depth and texture. This is a large sculpture and also includes an artist custom framed silkscreen with extensive handwork titled Line of Time, pencil signed and inscribed, presented in heavy metal and wooden frame (framed piece 24.5 x 30 in., sculpture piece is about 94 X 11 inches) Francoise Schein is a visual artist, trained as an architect - urban planner; She also teaches art at the ESAM Higher School of Arts and Media in Caen in Normandy . She is the founder of the INSCRIRE Association. In 2016, she was elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Arts and Fine Arts of Belgium. Group Exhibitions Spain: 2016, The "5Contemporary" Paris gallery presented a group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Genalguacil, Spain. The show included important artists such as Françoise Schein, Mimouni and Pedro Castrortega. Born in Brussels , Françoise Schein left Belgium after studying architecture at the higher institute of architecture of the French community - La Cambre where she wrote her thesis on fundamental rights, then studied urban design at the Columbia University in the City of New York . She lived 11 years in New York where she begins a work on cartography territories. Subway map Floating on NY Sidewalk is his first monumental urban sculpture located at 110 Greene Street in SoHo (1985). At that time her works are abstract landscapes of cities, made up of networks, lines, trajectories, territories, founding texts and stories. They are constructed of very diverse materials and light. Returning back to Europe in 1989, she continues to work on what she calls her drawings-laboratories while beginning to integrate works in cities on civic themes, the main ones: at the Concorde metro station in Paris in 1991 and then in Brussels, Saint-Gilles , in 1992, these two projects took her to Lisbon in 1993 where she lived for five years and produced two monumental works (in azulejos) for the city of Lisbon at Parque metro station ( 1994) and another for the city of Stockholm at the Universitetet station (1998). She continues to travel to cities where she builds successively projects in Haifa , on the facade of the Beth Hagefen Jewish-Arab Cultural Center with Michel Butor (1994). Then she lives in Berlin where she builds the Westhafen station (2000) which takes her to Bremen to make her first human rights park, Rhododendronpark (2002). In 2005, she made the monumental Time Zone Clock in Coventry in 2005. Since 1999, she has also settled in Rio de Janeiro and initiated participatory artistic projects with the underprivileged population of the favelas . Since then, with the help of a locally trained team, many projects have been carried out, including one in Copacabana and more than 20 in different favelas (from 1999 to 2016). These works transformed the Rio workshop into sustainable development for the people who invested it. In Sao Paulo, since 2009, Françoise Schein has produced a monumental work with the participation of 1000 young people from the favela schools at Luz subway station. Her work is monumental recalling the works of Christo, Maria Dompe, Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Ai Wei Wei...

Fabric-ation, signed monograph w/ hand made fabric covered boards 21/50 (unique)
Located in New York, NY
Yinka Shonibare Fabric-ation, 2013 Original Dutch wax print fabric chosen by the artist on Hardback cloth bound monograph with fabric covered board 12 1/2 × 11 × 1 1/2 inches Edition 21/50 (each entirely unique) Hand signed, dated and numbered 21/50 by Yinka Shonibare on the first front end page (see photo) Published by Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK This gorgeous hand signed, numbered and dated monograph with hand made fabric covered boards was published on the occasion of the Yinka Shonibare MBE: Fabric - ation Exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Kunstforeingen Gl Strand in 2013. 160 pages Hand signed, numbered and dated by artist in on the first front end page. Beyond the exhibition plates, the catalogue also includes an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist and texts by Dr Rebecca Schneider and Jean Fisher. The book measures 12.5" x 11", and is 160 pages. Shonibare produced this beautiful catalogue in an edition of only 50, and is sold out. Each work is totally unique, and has been cloth bound using a different original Dutch wax print fabric with embellishments that was chosen by the artist. It is also signed and numbered by Shonibare. Taking place in three of YSP’s indoor galleries and the open air, FABRIC–ATION featured over 30 vibrant works from the period 2002–2013 including sculpture, film, photography, painting and collage, with many works never before seen in the UK. This major exhibition was sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank. Born in London in 1962, Shonibare moved to Nigeria when he was three, later returning to the UK to study art. His work shrewdly explores and confounds stereotypes of race and class, engaging with ideas around identity and authenticity as well as dislocation, multiculturalism, global food production and revolution, often addressed through playful conceits. This approach is part of his determination to avoid being categorised: Shonibare accepted an MBE in 2004, adopting the title into his working name, saying, “it was the last thing you would have expected of me”. More about Yinka Shonibare: Yinka Shonibare CBE RA was born in London in 1962 and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He returned to the UK to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London and Goldsmiths College, London, where he received his Master’s in Fine Art. Over the past decades, Shonibare has become well known for his exploration of colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalization. Working in painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, Shonibare’s work examines race, class and the construction of cultural identity through a sharp political commentary of the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories. Shonibare uses wry citations of Western art history and literature to question the validity of contemporary cultural and national identities. In 2002, Shonibare was commissioned by Okwui Enwezor to create one of his most recognised installations, Gallantry and Criminal Conversation for Documenta XI. In 2004, he was nominated for the Turner Prize and was awarded the decoration of Member of the ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’, or MBE. In 2019 Shonibare was made Commander of the same order, amending his professional name to include CBE. In 2008, his mid-career survey commenced at Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and toured to the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. In 2010, his first public art commission Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle was displayed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. In 2013, Shonibare was elected as a Royal Academician and his most recent contributions have included: the RA Family Album, which was used to wrap Burlington Gardens building during construction and his two curated rooms which were part of the 2017 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, during which Wind Sculpture VI was also displayed in the RA courtyard. His recent major commission with the Public Art Fund, Wind Sculpture (SG) I, was installed at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park from March 7 through October 14, 2018. FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art presented The American Library at the Cleveland Public Library from July 14 until September 30, 2018. The British Library was recently acquired by the Tate London. In March 2021, Shonibare received Whitechapel Gallery’s prestigious Art Icon award, becoming the eighth artist to receive the honor. He was also selected to coordinate the Royal Academy of Arts 253rd Summer Exhibition in September 2021. Shonibare’s works are included in notable collections internationally, including the Tate Collection, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; Pérez Art Museum Miami in Florida and VandenBroek Foundation, The Netherlands. -Courtesy of James Cohan Gallery
