About

Images of bodies and body parts feature prominently in many of the 'White Grounds' works. El-Sayegh approaches the body through three main frameworks: the scientific, the cultural, and the personal. With regards to the scientific, El-Sayegh is interested in the experimental and research-based, and in processes of growth and decay, often incorporating anatomical images of muscles into her works. Through the cultural, El-Sayegh explores typical notions of beauty. She often situates images of celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid aside visually contrasting (and often ironic) gestures and texts. Finally, El-Sayegh approaches the personal as a way into bodily, familial, and ancestral history, incorporating imagery relating to DNA and her father’s hand-written notes (primarily in Arabic) into her work. Mandy El-Sayegh is a London-based artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, silkscreen, collage, sculpture, and installation. El-Sayegh’s distinctive aesthetic ranges from carefully repeated patterns in blue ink (Window Works), to more gestural oil paint grids (Net-Grid works) and thick applications of paint atop collage, to assemblages of materials sourced from her extensive personal archive. El-Sayegh engages in explorations of materiality and language through various experimental processes. She approaches vast theoretical concerns related to science, medicine, the human body, and the political issues of our time through fragmented images and objects, breaking down her questions into smaller material fragments—pieces of newspapers, parts of photographs, or portions of found objects. El-Sayegh then layers these fragments atop each other in new ways by mobilizing found imagery and texts alongside materials such as paint, latex, and clay. El-Sayegh describes her practice as observational and exploratory. She compares her work, in its focus on processes and seemingly arbitrary emergence of new phenomena, to political and cultural structures that develop in similar ways.
