About the Item
This sculpture depicts a white porcelain pig embodying sheer determination. Hand sculpted in a super-white porcelain by New York artist Bethany Krull the gorgeous porcelain surface is left primarily unglazed except for the clear shiny glaze applied to the eyes and hooves of the pig. The number eight pennant flag is hand sewn while the wooden "hurdle" base is painted in a playful palette of blue and lime green. This work is from the artist's "Dominance and Affection" series that explores our society's most intimate connection with the natural world that tends to be with the plants and animals that we have altered through the process of domestication. So many wild animals are turned into pets, genetically sculpted into sweeter, cuter, less dangerous versions of themselves. Our homes have become barriers that keep the wild out, yet they are filled with caged animals, potted plants and countless other creatures and representations of the natural world as we strive to give balance and meaning to our technology-laden and, often, nature deprived lives.
