About the Item
Inspired by the artist's Facebook and Instagram feeds, she uses embroidery, watercolor, and fabric manipulation to render her own “selfies” or portraits of others, often talking about dating and love experiences. Her embroidery and watercolor paintings on fabric often incorporate antique textiles with lace edges.
By creating tactile representations of private images in anachronistic media, she points out our disconnect with public self-exposure, and question the psychosocial impacts of over-sharing via social media. How can one heal from a breakup if an ex-love still appears on Instagram and Facebook? How do we create boundaries in a time when “too much information” has become de rigueur? It takes mere seconds to upload an image to Instagram or Facebook, yet hours to recreate the same image in paint and thread. If we took a moment to reflect before posting some of our images, would our social and intimate lives be different?
