1482 spools of thread, aluminum ball chain and hanging apparatus, clear acrylic spheres, steel stand, edition 4 of 5
Devorah Sperber’s work exists at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Following the centuries-long tradition of exploring the processes of perception, a lineage including Leonardo da Vinci, Georges Seurat, and Salvador Dali, among others, Sperber’s work explores the discrepancy between what we actually see and how our brains process it. Made from thousands of spools of thread her barely recognizable, pixilated, abstracted reproductions of celebrated works throughout history transform into exacting versions of the originals when viewed through an optical device. Of her process, Sperber says, “I started to use optical devices by chance. I was creating my first thread spool work in a very small studio. I couldn’t see it in its entirety. There were binoculars lying around and I flipped them around, using them the wrong way, to see the whole thing. When I did that the abstract thread spools changed into a realist image again.” Since then Sperber has used acrylic spheres, convex mirrors, and reversed mirrors to create compelling works that highlight how the brain makes sense of the visual world.
Her work is included in the public collections of Fashion 26 Hotel, RCCL Independence of the Seas, Vornado Realty Trust in New York, Wells Real Estate Funds, Centro Medico Train Station in Puerto Rico, University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, Joslyn Castle, and the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester.
