About the Item

My World is Full of Possibilities - Blue 2021 Mixed media, acrylic paint and archival print on acrylic, recycled plastic, gold leaf, and mirror. Arica Hilton's "My World is Full of Possibilities" Series Narrative: This series is called “My World Is Full of Possibilities.” The subject matter in this series is #coral that I photographed #underwater during my #scientific #expedition to the islands of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. My goal is to initiate a #dialogue about the issues of the health of our #oceans and it’s inhabitants and the #dilemma we face, while showing the beauty and generosity our oceans have to offer. Below are the many reasons why we should care about the oceans: 1. The air we breathe: The ocean produces nearly 70% of the world's oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. 2. Climate regulation: Covering 70 percent of the Earth's surface, the ocean soaks up heat and transports warm water from the equator to the poles, and cold water from the poles to the tropics. Without these currents, the weather would be extreme in some regions, and fewer places would be habitable. It regulates rain and droughts. Almost all rain that drops on land comes from the sea. The ocean absorbs CO2, to keep the carbon cycle, and accordingly temperatures on earth, in balance. It is our global climate control system. 3. The ocean is the number one source of protein for more than a billion people. 4. The ocean is not just home to us ocean lovers, but it is home to the greatest abundance of life on our planet. There is more life below the ocean’s surface than on land. Experts predict that there are more than 300,000 different species underwater, and is still not clear how many of them we know. All the creatures that live in the Ocean play an essential role in the trophic chain of the ecosystems. 5. Millions of people depend on the ocean for their subsistence. 6. The ocean has therapeutic properties. 7. The best holidays are near or on the ocean!

"I throw myself into the water almost every day- it grounds me, the body floats and the mind drifts. The "Swimmer series" has followed me over the years, resurfacing and evolving. Presently I'm working on wood, I'm intrigued by wood grain swirling like water and how that ground moves through the swimmer's form”. Carol graduated from the Art Center College of Design in painting. For some 20 years she split her time between her loft in downtown LA and a beach bungalow in Hawaii- satisfying a passion for culture and the ocean's pull. In LA she painted backdrops...
