About
Otero draws inspiration from art history and his memories of growing up in Puerto Rico. He is inspired by artists such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Jeanette Winters, El Greco, Velázquez, Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, Claude Poussin, and Pablo Picasso.
Each painting begins with a reference to an object or image that holds personal or historical significance for him. Through physically engaging processes of painting and drawing, Otero abstracts these references, resulting in work that is visually autonomous from the original imagery.
Conceptually, Otero is motivated by the challenge of transforming an existing image into his own visual language. This desire to obscure and translate imagery articulates Otero’s position within the context of abstract painting as he confronts contemporary biases against the relevancy of painting and abstraction as visual forms of expression. Otero suggests painting’s enduring relevance through his constant exploration of materials and innovations in process.
