About

Pablo Picasso is arguably the most innovative, influential, and prolific artist of the 20th-century. The artist’s radical development of Cubism altered the course of art by breaking with the 500-year old Renaissance-ruled tradition of artistic representation. Over the course of his long career, Picasso remained vital and versatile, innovating distinctive styles and exploring a number of different media, including: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, tapestry, and ceramics. By his own admission, Picasso’s art was always autobiographical, representing his thoughts, relationships, muses, struggles, and accomplishments. HIS EARLY CAREER IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR PERIODS: The Blue Period (1901–04) is characterized by long, attenuated figures of beggars, derelicts, and tramps, executed in cool shades of blue. Picasso’s Rose Period (1905–06) is imbued with sentimentality and romance and is comprised of pictures of harlequins and acrobats painted in warm shades of pink and earth colors. Picasso discovered African masks, ritual objects, and sculpture around 1907, and incorporated various African stylistic elements and abstractions and into his own work during his African-influenced Period (1907–09). Picasso invented Cubism by breaking apart solid forms into various jagged planes in his seminal painting Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907). Cubism (1908–14) is characterized by the rejection of traditional perspective and naturalistic representation in favor of sharp, geometrically rendered planes. *************************************** TÊTE D’HOMME Throughout his long career, Picasso valued the practice and final effects of simplified and spontaneous drawings in pencil, ink, or wax crayon. From the 1960s onwards, one of the artist’s preferred subjects was the individual, frontal male portrait (self-portrait?). Picasso produced a series of pseudo-historical portraits that were derived from the study of 17th-century Dutch portraiture. Similar to his depiction of musketeers, this Tête d’homme invokes the Golden Age of Dutch art with the hint of a ruff around the man’s neck.
