This is a figure and head study for the extreme right figure depicted in Apollo and the Muses, one of the magnificent ovals decorating the dome of the rotunda of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The mural projects for the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts lasted for thirty years and the installation of the murals in the Museum of Fine Arts was the culmination of Sargent's career as an artist and muralist.
This drawing has been reviewed and accepted by Warren Adelson, Elaine Kilmurray, Richard Ormond and Elizabeth Oustinoff, authors of the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonné (New Haven and London: Yale University Press).
