"Water Garden 13, " Realistic Flora Pastel Drawing signed by Victoria Ryan

1995

About the Item

"Water Garden 13" is an original pastel drawing on paper by Victoria Ryan. The artist signed the piece. It features a variety of pond flowers on a shimmering blue pond. The artist is highly skilled at depicting flora realistically. 26" x 19 3/4" art 34" x 27 3/4" frame I am a working artist. The better part of my days are spent creating in my studio. Additional hours are filled by pursuing the who what and how of making a living in this pursuit. I got rather good at it early on…identifying where my work belonged and eventually, how to help other artists do the same. Today, a slice of my time is devoted to being a marketing coach to artists at all stages of their careers who are striving to identify where they fit in the marketplace or who are facing issues in these post-recessionary times. I barter for knowledge. But mostly, I am a painter. I work primarily in soft pastels and secondarily in oils, casein and mixed media. I am attracted to landscapes, architecture, and abstract themes based on nature. The underlying theme that runs through all of my work is the idea of a heightened reality. Growing up in the Los Angeles area, I was inspired by the saturated light and color of the Southern California landscape. Additionally, a somewhat metaphysical element drives my creative process. I have always been intrigued by my own dream imagery - that intense sense of reality that is experienced in the rare lucid dream or in moments of pure transcendence. My goal is to paint scenes that exist on a slightly higher vibration to elicit an enhanced sense of mood and feeling… My abstractions are created through a largely intuitive process based on the premise of a deconstructed landscape or more accurately, a piece of a collective subconscious sketchbook of what the process of perceiving and inventing what would become nature might look like. Soft pastel has been my preferred medium since I first started exploring with it in college. Nothing compares to those pigments to achieve the rich color and spontaneity they provide. I work with numerous varieties and brands from the butter-like Unison to the soft Sennelier, as well as homemade sticks. My surfaces are the finest archival papers and prepared boards. Layers of color are applied and some blending is achieved using fingers and blending sticks. I have returned to painting in oils and casein and various combinations of these incorporating charcoal, graphite and oil sticks. I am taking time to experiment with media that I have not worked with in a long while and it is refreshing to bring out tools I haven’t used in years. I am a wife and mother. Over the years I continued to migrate north in California, finally reaching what some call Baja Oregon. Our family lives beyond the redwoods and near the ocean, in the artist friendly city of Eureka, California. It’s a sweet life here, albeit uber mellow at times. We have a mini dachshund named “Buddy” who brightens our spirits and keeps us laughing.

    By Peggy Leonard

"Willow Shadows at Chenequa" is an original pastel drawing on canson paper by Peggy Leonard. The artist signed the piece lower left. It depicts a row of willow trees with deep shadows. The artist used variations of green and blue. 12 3/4" x 19 1/2" art 18 3/4" x 26" frame Peggy Leonard received her BFA in painting and drawing and an associate’s degree in nursing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She is both a registered nurse, and accomplished artist, residing in Milwaukee, WI. From the artist: “These paintings are my prayers,” muses Leonard, reflecting on her driving need to express herself through her art. “We are made of the stuff that requires us to respond with our hearts and hands. Often, it requires terrible sacrifice and suffering, something not everyone can understand. But it is done with reverence of life, not irreverence.” Leonard’s pastels and oil paintings capture her reverence of life and reflect her own life’s journey, including earlier forays into the wilderness. Her venture into art began in early childhood, as childless neighbors nurtured her natural ability to draw; concurrently, Leonard’s parents instilled a respect for academic excellence and the higher order of nurturing others. As a young nurse, Leonard “heard and saw poignant messages to travel while one was young and free…while one had one’s health.” Consequently, she took to the open road and public lands, camping across America for months at a time. During these years, her “celebration of the natural splendor of this country” helped shape her sense of artistic expression. She was moved by such sights as the sunset on St. Mary’s Lake...
