About the Item

Beautiful watercolor by Laurence Sisson (American, 1928-2015) of a rainbow over the Florida Keys and coast. Signed "Sisson" lower left, "Sisson". Displayed in white mat and metal frame. Image, 6"H x 7.75"W. Sisson was born in Boston, Massachusetts and became a landscape painter and illustrator. He studied at Yale Summer School and was artist-in-residence at Publick House in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and in 1955 became Director of the Portland, Maine School of Fine and Applied Art. He is known primarily for landscapes. The accomplished oil and watercolor artist, whose landscapes are in the permanent collections of 16 American museums, was born in Boston in 1928. He lived most of his life in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, before moving to Santa Fe in 1979 and to Albuquerque in the mid-1980s. “He was a classic American painter,” said Wigley, owner of Michael Wigley Galleries in Santa Fe, who represented Sisson exclusively from 1991 until his death. “Very traditional, very prolific. His art covered landscapes from Maine to the desert Southwest, large, historic-sized landscapes, dramatic clouds. He’s most famous for his pebble technique.” At the time of his death, Wigley said, Sisson’s works were selling for between $6,000 and $100,000 apiece. Three years ago, Wigley said, one of Sisson’s works sold for $102,000 at a Chicago art auction. Wigley said Sisson was the first living artist to have his work exhibited at the Vose Galleries in Boston, one of the oldest galleries in the United States, and the first living artist to show at the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe. Wigley said Sisson was also the first artist to do a painting demonstration on color television after RCA introduced the technology at the 1964 World’s Fair. Lauded as a professional artist from the age of 17, Sisson was the subject of numerous news articles and books as well as a PBS television documentary. One of his works graced the cover of Fortune magazine in 1951. Sisson had only a smattering of formal training but was awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts from the Maine School of Arts, to which he left a large endowment. He served in the Army after World War II, according to his widow, Judy Sisson. She said he was picked to decorate the homes of high-ranking officials who arrived in Japan during the post-war occupation. After he moved to New Mexico, his widow said, Sisson served as foreman on a grand jury that brought some of the first indictments related to the deadly 1980 riots at the state penitentiary. Historian Orlando Romero said he met Sisson when the painter lived in Nambé and they worked together to get funds to pay attorneys to protect the rights of Pojoaque Valley residents involved in the long-running Aamodt water rights case. “He built a bond here among Hispanics and Anglos,” Romero said. “He was deeply loved.” “He had friends from every walk of life,” Judy Sisson said. “It didn’t matter if you just dug cotton or you were the governor. He knew senators and lobster men, and they were all equal in his eyes.” Sisson’s widow said that in addition to being a painter, her husband also played the piano, was an accomplished golfer, a crack croquet player, a gardener and a storyteller extraordinaire. She said that among the stories he entertained her with over the 25 years they were married were tales of playing croquet by candlelight at Yale summer school and seeing Salvador Dalí walking an armadillo on a leash. Wigley recalled that Sisson also gave private watercolor lessons to former U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts.
