About the Item
The view from my studio, looking across Brooklyn’s lower lying factory and warehouse buildings toward the tall grandness of Manhattan, is incredibly complex and at times overwhelming. It is almost too much to take in but, while looking, Josette Urso wanders around the spaces between the buildings looking to understand the flow and logic of this geometric maze.
These drawings are made directly and urgently in response to her immediate environment. The fresh page represents an arena for possibility and discovery. A single mark extends into a path and strolls through territory that is both extremely familiar and extremely new.
As with intense athletic activity, time evaporates as she draws and finds a zone of consciousness that includes only the activity at hand and everything else falls away. While drawing, there is always a sense of acquiring recovered knowledge. There is also a confluence of visual, mental and physical engagement resulting in an allover, rewarding sensation that, for her, is distinct from any other activity. she finds drawing to be the most direct link to private time with the physical world.
Josette Urso has exhibited in New York at the Drawing Center, Markel Fine Arts, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Storefront, Norte Maar, DFN and the New York Public Library.
She has received a Gottlieb Foundation award, two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, a Basil H. Alkazzi painting award as well as residencies from the AIEP American Artist’s Abroad program (Cambodia), Ballinglen Arts Foundation (Ireland), Camargo Foundation (France), Stock 20 (Taiwan), Ucross (Wyoming) and Yaddo.
Urso was a participant in the Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM program.
She received her MFA (Painting) from the University of South Florida and currently works in Brooklyn.

Moving from within a matrix of measurement, observation and contingent effects, her work resists characterization as product, and continually accesses fields outside itself. For her, process equals trial. Her work emulates potential forms of life, in various systems and territories, from a perspective of the non-self– a world beyond identity. McPhee’s dynamic, performative, physical engagement with materials, in both her analogue and digital works, is a seduction into surface-skidding calligraphic gestures and mark-making. The tactics of living are in subterfuge, like the ‘dazzle ships...Category
