About the Item

Represented by George Billis Gallery NY & LA -- Due to a fall that resulted in the fracture of Chambers’ left shoulder socket, his dominant left arm had to be immobilized for many weeks. During this time Chambers made drawings with his non-dominant right hand. The process was laborious and very slow but rewarding in discoveries. The abrupt altering of his working habits led to the drawings that are in this exhibition. Since his recovery from this injury he has continued these investigations with his left hand. Chambers made them without the plan of a series but as they developed he realized that they tap into his 45 years of varied experiences in the art world. These drawings come from his own engagement and fascination with art works and the art world. Throughout all the different inspirations of Chambers’ work, light, color, luminosity, and luscious color have emerged as a central message. With his paintings of men there is more of a kind of sensuality in them with a narrative that is semi-sexual. Chambers feels that his earlier paintings also have this feature, but it comes out through their color and luminosity. He says, “I think there is a sensuality, a clear bright sensual light that is always present in my work.”
