Bernard Dunstan RA RWA (1920-2017) Signed & Framed English Pastel, Woman Resting

About

An exquisite example of post war artist Bernard Dunstan's line work. The relaxed pose of the sitter and sensitive approach to mark making is typical of Dunstan's work. This impressionistic style indicates the significance of his New English Art Club membership. Well presented in a double card mount and gilt frame. Signed with monogram to the lower right. On laid paper. Provenance: Royal Academy of Arts Business Gallery and Mall Galleries (exhibition labels on the reverse). Titled 'Woman Resting Her Head on Arm' to echibition label. This piece was also illustrated in promotional literature for a New English Club exhibition at The Malls Galleries in 1978. Artist Biography: Bernard Dunstan RA RWA was born in Teddington, Middlesex in 1920. He studied at Byam Shaw School of Art under Ernest Jackson (1939) and at the Slade School of Art (1939-41). He went on to teach at the West of England School of Art in Bristol, Camberwell School of Art, Byam Shaw School of Art, Ravensbourne Art College and City and Guilds of London Art School. Dunstan exhibited regularly with Roland, Browse and Delbanco, London with Agnew's, London, since 1972 and with Stremmel Gallery, Nevada, USA, since 1981. He also exhibited annually in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the New English Art Club, and his work is held in many private collections. Dunstan was elected Royal Academician in 1968, and was President of the Royal West of England Academy from 1979 to 1984. He has written several books on painting, including Learning to Paint and Painting Methods of the Impressionists. Known for his figurative work and new impressionist style Dunstan's work owes much to the Sickert tradition. His domestic interiors and informal compositional approach, quietly captures the intimacy of a solitary moment. Image Size: 24 x 34cm (9.4" x 13.4") Framed Size: 44 x 53.5cm (17.3" x 21.1")
