Scorpio Augury: Round Astrological Drawing on Handmade Paper by Kahn & Selesnick

2019

About the Item

Scorpio Augury (Circular Crimson Pastel Drawing on Indian Handmade Cotton Paper by Kahn & Selesnick) 41 inch diameter, unframed pastel, conte crayon on paper Kahn & Selesnick’s latest project “Madame Lulu’s Book of Fate” continues the adventures of the Truppe Fledermaus, a cabaret troupe of anxious mummers and would-be mystics who catalogue their absurdist attempts to augur a future that seems increasingly in peril due to environmental pressures and global turmoil. In this body of work, the artists also examine the notion of the carnivalesque – traditionally the carnival was a time when the normal order of society was upended and reversed, so that at least for a day the fool might become king, the sinner a priest, men and women might cross dress, and sacred ceremonies and normal mores are burlesqued and spoofed. During such brief times of anarchy, societal pressures were relieved by revealing their somewhat absurd and arbitrary natures. Costumes and masks were traditionally worn so that all people might have the same social status during the duration of the festival. The Truppe ask you to consider: is it the carnival that is upside-down, or perhaps the real world that it purports to burlesque? The artistic duo’s latest extension to the ongoing series re-envisions the Danse Macabre, the Medieval allegory that reminds us no matter one’s station in life, the “Dance of Death” will ultimately unite us all. Four five-foot long panoramic images gracefully unfurl the Truppe’s cast of characters adorned in a variety of dress harkening back to French Revolution era. A parade of fools and dandies tread on thin ice in the company of agile skeletons, a beautiful yet haunting reminder that humans are on a slow march towards a shared fate. In the face of a turbulent political and environmental crisis, the artists make their own appeal to change the future with a series of circular drawings on handmade paper in pastel and conte crayon. "Panogolin Bonaparte" and "Medusa" are among the drawings that illustrate the transformation of humans into animals, a fantasy of mankind’s integration with nature. The drawings in this series are presented as votive offerings to the Gods as a last attempt to bargain for a more hopeful future. About the work: Scorpio is the eighth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Scorpius. Scorpio is associated with three different animals: the scorpion, the snake, and the eagle (or phoenix). The snake and eagle are related to the nearby constellations of Ophiuchus and Aquila. Scorpio is also associated with the Greek deity Artemis, who is said to have created the constellation Scorpius. Scorpio's colors are deep red, maroon, brown and black. • Der Fled Maus (Figurative Drawing of Costumed Man with Moon on Teal Paper)
By Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick

Figurative drawing of a costumed man with two moons on handmade teal colored paper "Der Fled Maus", made by Kahn & Selesnick in 2011 mixed media, graphite, and pastel handmade paper 17 x 17 inches in walnut vintage wood frame with 8ply mat 7.5 x 7.5 inches unframed This whimsical mixed media drawing on handmade teal colored paper was made by the creative duo Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick as part of their series "Truppe Fledermaus", wherein the artists celebrate the carnivalesque with a cast of peculiar costumed characters. In this illustration, a cloaked figure stands in front of a door with the moon, in two different phases, appearng in the background. The artists' highly stylized approach adds an almost vintage touch. The drawing is complemented by a simple vintage walnut frame, and a sturdy wire across the back provides for easy hanging. About Truppe Fledermaus: Kahn & Selesnick’s latest project follows a fictitious cabaret troupe – Truppe Fledermaus (Bat Troupe) – who travel the countryside staging absurd and inscrutable performances in abandoned landscapes for an audience of no one. The playful but dire message presented by the troupe is of impending ecological disaster, caused by rising waters and a warming planet, the immediate consequences of which include the extinction of the Bat, a shamanistic figure representing both nature and humanity. In one sense, the entire cabaret troupe can be seen as a direct reflection of the artists themselves, both entities employing farce and black humor to engage utterly serious concerns.
