Maxfield Parrish
Mr. Pibb and Friend

c. 1890-1908

About

Known for his depictions of idyllic fantasy dreamscapes populated by Neoclassical beauties and intensely rich and saturated hues, Maxfield Parrish made a name for himself as one of the most popular and successful commercial artists of the early 20th century. This simple pencil drawing on brown paper is a far cry from the elaborate and detailed landscapes that fans and illustration art connoisseurs are familiar with. Titled "Mr. Pibb and Friend," this drawing features an anthropomorphized horse wearing trousers and a suit coat that he tops off with a bowler hat, walking cane, and cigarette. This gentleman horse is out for a stroll with his young pup friend trailing close behind. This presentation drawing created for Parrish's four young children and provides a rarely seen peek into the private imagination of the artist whom Norman Rockwell called "my idol". Housed behind glass and professionally matted and beautifully framed this piece was displayed at the Maxfield Parrish Museum in Windsor, Vermont and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It is in carefully preserved condition with tide line along the left side of the image. Measures a framed 13.25" x 12" with a sight size of 7" x 5.5"
