About the Item

Ballpoint pen and inkjet on paper. Unframed. Caldicott has always had a habit of working serially; his works on paper are rapidly produced and large in quantity. His drawings have a minimal esthetic, an architectural character, created with only one or two lines. Pastel tones, softened colors, and a formal composition generate a feeling of austerity and sophistication. Richard Caldicott is an English artist who explores abstract photography and creates abstract compositions on paper. He lives and works in London. As an interdisciplinary artist, Caldicott comes across materials and techniques, including drawing, photography, and sculpture. His works on paper, made with ballpoint pen and inkjet printing, reveal a bare sophistication whether it be with minimal drawings or with buoyant and colourful forms. His work has a relationship with architectural and musical structures, formalism and geometry, referring to modernist painters, designers and architects like Donald Judd, Max Bill, Barnett Newman and Ellsworth Kelly. “I like artists who do other stuff. With Judd, I like his architecture, his furniture, his printmaking. It’s the same with Max Bill, somebody who crossed over into different fields, with furniture and architecture” Repetition is an important element of the artist's work, this strategy echoes the art making of the Minimalism period. So is series, “Caldicott is an archetypal adopter of a ‘serial attitude’ “ as per writer Derek Horton’s quote. His works are featured in various international and corporate collections including Sir Elton John collection, Goldman Sachs, and Clarks UK.

  • Sara Eichner, 32 Layers Pink and Orange, 2016, , Minimalist Abstraction, Ink
    By Sara Eichner
    Located in Darien, CT
Sara Eichner wants to create a space where point of view can not be fixed. Optical games stand in for the struggle to comprehend the complexities of seeing. Using simple drawing tools and paper, she engages a systematic process that branches into new forms as they meet if / else junctures in the work. The series grow iteratively, engaging perception as a subject and a means. To begin, she creates a grid of converging lines in perspective to establish a basic unit of pictorial space. That bound unit: lines and perspective; becomes the foundation for building complexity. Variables such as repetition, color, incremental rotation, inversion, concentration and dispersion are applied. Properties of the initial unit are subverted and transformed. Play between solidity and transparency, mass and lightness, concentration and diffusion, slows down perception. A build up of marks aggregates into optical mixtures and resolves into patterns created by processes of rotation and layering. These patterns and binary relationships emerge slowly. The networks of lines converge and disperse creating multiple visual paths through fields of structured accumulation. Her very human hand leaves behind texture that animates the final artifacts of this process. Sara Eichner is a graduate of Kenyon College (BA) and Syracuse University (MFA). She has had solo exhibitions at PPOW and Sears Peyton...
