About the Item

“This work is a meditation on the vibrancy of nature and its shape-shifting ability to evolve and survive. I’m exploring hidden systems, secret codes, and micro-organisms; it is an intellectual as well as instinctual response to what is happening in what we call 'nature'. The use of watercolor, Ink and pencil allows me to investigate two types of patterns: the controlled use of pencil work as well as the happy accidents of flowing water media. Inviting both methods onto the paper affords the interaction of overt pattern and covert systems.” Artist Statement: My current series explores the natural and synthetic worlds in the tradition of abstract bio-morphism, with a connection to Eco-Feminist practice as well. These paintings and drawings investigate imagined environments where organic systems interweave and collide, transform and co-exist in a delicate balance. The work submitted has a direct resonance with the exhibition focus. After watching “My Octopus Teacher” as well as reading the ‘Soul of an Octopus’ by Sy Montgomery, I researched a variety of 19th century octopus illustrations to use as inspiration. Tentacles in particular were a place of departure for re-imagining organic limbs and biomorphic tools. Octopoda, an ancient chameleon, has had 500 million years to figure out life on earth; shape-shifting, regenerating and surviving against difficult odds. Homo Sapiens, a relatively new species, is slow to adapt; we struggle for balance as the earth transforms above and beneath us. Sapiens could learn from the octopuses’ practice of deep adaptation, and they can serve as an inspiration for our future selves. Artist Bio: Marcie Begleiter is a New York born, California-based artist working in drawing, painting, ceramics and film. Her work has been supported by grants from the NEA, LACES, the Foundation for Art Resources and Germany's Hamburger Kunsthalle. Her work has been featured recently in “Love in the Time of Covid” at the Miossi Gallery in San Luis Obispo, “Contemporary Drawing Roundup” on Vasari 21, and in earlier shows at Margo Levin Gallery, the Pasadena Arts Alliance and the 18th St. Arts Complex in Los Angeles. In 2015 the Whitney Museum premiered her award-winning feature documentary “Eva Hesse”, a portrait of the ground-breaking 1960s artist's life and working process. She is Founding Director of the Integrated Learning Program at Otis College of Art, Associate Professor of in the Graduate Department Film at Art Center College of Design and on the founding faculty of the International Filmschule in Köln, Germany.
