About the Item

"X-Fields 10" is part of a series of drawings that were typed with a traditional typewriter. For it, Ignacio Uriarte started to type the letter "x" in the upper left corner of the sheet and continued to type this letter until he decided that it was about time to leave one letter out – he was thus typing a space. Then, after the space, he continued typing the letter "x" until again it was time for a space etc. By doing so, he pre-decided what would come next, because many (if not: most) of the lines were the starting point for fields with x that are more or less exact squares. Thus, after the first decisions were made, the rest of the drawing followed more or less automatically. Like with the urban sprawl, what is already there, defines what follows. The result is a sheet of paper that has been heavily typed on (and therefore is not hanging down straight but in light waves, as if – how the artist expressed – it was a "Schnitzel") and that shows fields of "x"s that structure the surface of the whole sheet with irregular squares. In general, Uriarte (*1972 in Krefeld, lives in Berlin) is dealing in his work with the topic of the daily office-routine and he is working with / deconstructing materials that can be found in any kind of office. With these materials he creates drawings, installations, photographs and other works that have a poetic quality and that deal with questions of time, structure, order and monotony as they do deal with the creative potential in seemingly inefficient minutes at work, when – for instance – during a conversation one of the participants scribbles on a pad. With his conceptual approach as well as by using the materials of the office, he is creating a Dadaist link between the two worlds of work and art. Uriarte began his professional life working in commercial companies like Xerox or Siemens. At a certain moment in his life he decided that he could not stand any longer his daily routine in the office. Thus, he decided to become an artist – mainly self-taught, partly with an academic education in video and film. He is enjoying a lot of success since this monumental change of direction. His works have been shown in a lot of international solo- as well as group-exhibitions: Art and Alphabet at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg (g); EchtZeit, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn (g); Bürozeit, Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, Bergisch Gladbach (s); Drawing now, Albertina, Vienna (g); The Bottom Line, SMAK Ghent (g); The sound of a line, Fondation Hermès, Tokyo (g); Unos y Ceros, MARCO, Vigo (s); Binaries, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City (s); Line of work, The Drawing Center, New York (s); Arbeitsraum, Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, Berlin (s); Origo, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna (g); WORKS, Centre d’Art La Panera, Lleidao and Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (s); Rotation 2, Ruler Space, Helsinki (g); Quatre sets de geometria I un full de paper, Arts Santa Mónica, Barcelona (g); Preferiría no hacerlo, Casa des Lago, Mexico City (g); Bürokünstler, Leopold Hoesch Museum, Düren (s); Verwaltungstakte, Stiftung für konkrete Kunst, Reutlingen (s); 210 x 297 cm, Kunstraum Lakeside, Klagenfurth am Wörthersee (s); xyz, Museo ABC, Madrid (s). • "Uhu Schuhu", collage with cut-outs from Magritte reproductions, appropriation
    By Nic Hess
    Located in Cologne, DE
Nic Hess (*1968 in Zurich, where he also lives and works) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the University of the Arts, Berlin. He got mainly known for his expansive installations and wall collages made of tapes and foils. With these, he deconstructed signs (logos) and symbols from the worlds of business and art history. Now, however, he resorts to his own sign-system, signs that stem from his biography or his personal environment. In particular, for his collages, that he was doing in the last years, he was using hundreds of art and architecture books that he had found in his late father’s library. Like many people in a similar situation, Hess asked himself what he was to do with the books. And he decided to make productive use of them and for his own work. By transforming the books of the library into his own art he created a sort of memorial to his father. Because with the reproductions of some of the illustrated books he made collages, playful new compositions based on the works of mainly three artists: the Swiss Max Bill, the American Edward Hopper and the Belgian René Magritte – all being his father's heroes. "Uhu Schuhu" has been collaged with reproductions stemming from illustrations of paintings by René Magritte. It is a neo-surrealist work that Hess – with a tongue in cheek – loaded with humor. Hess looks back to a long career and to a very large number of institutional solo-shows of which here just a few are mentioned: Zulieferer unter Druck, Städtische Galerie, Wolfsburg (2016); Der Stoff aus dem die Träume waren, Kunsthalle Münster, Münster (2015); Ein Titel muss her!, Kunststation Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg (2013); The Birds (for Lilou), Swiss Institute, New York (2012); Silberpfeil, Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart (2011); Automatic Crash Response, Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2009); Escape, Schloß Ringenberg, Hamminkeln (2009); Sculptures, The Project, New York (2008); Food4Less, Museo de Zapopan, Zapopan (2007); Walls/Muri (with Federico Herrero...

Because with the reproductions of some of the illustrated books he made collages, playful new compositions based on the works of artists like – amongst others – Edward Hopper or Roy Liechtenstein. For his own "Frightened Girl" Hess made use of girls of Roy Liechtenstein-paintings. He cut and re-connected them, creating a kind of cubist version of the original. The result, that even made use of the caption in a Liechtenstein-monograph, was carefully put in a frame chosen by the artist. Hess looks back to a long career and to a very large number of institutional solo-shows of which here just a few are mentioned: Zulieferer unter Druck, Städtische Galerie, Wolfsburg (2016); Der Stoff aus dem die Träume waren, Kunsthalle Münster, Münster (2015); Ein Titel muss her!, Kunststation Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg (2013); The Birds (for Lilou), Swiss Institute, New York (2012); Silberpfeil, Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart (2011); Automatic Crash Response, Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2009...
