Growth in the Waste Land

2016

About

One of the most reoccurring themes in Vanni's paintings is the transformative quality of nature. Transforming plants, animals, insects, landscapes, cellular organism etc. For this work he photographed a detail of a sandstone formation and integrated it with pencil drawing. The boundaries between the real and the invented image blur one into the other. The outcome is an imaginative and extraordinary landscape of a mystery land. The choice of using only shades of black and gray infer to the composition a timeless quality. Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He has been actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He thought color theory at the Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for over 30 years. His works have been shown in the United States, Europe and Japan.
