Susan Greer Emmerson
"Single-Wide in Two Parts with Septic Tank", drawing, ink, charcoal, home

2018

About the Item

Susan Emmerson's "Single-Wide in Two Parts with Septic Tank" is a 30 x 22 inch ink, charcoal and colored pencil drawing of a violently broken mobile home, ripped from the ground, gutted and perched on a teetering pile of debris; an allusion to the socioeconomic inequality of the effects of natural disasters. The soft sketch technique and muted colors contrast sharply with the stark reality of the message. The drawing is floated in a gray wood-tone frame measuring 36 x 27 inches and is signed on the back. Susan Greer Emmerson makes art about natural disasters: meditations on the loss of home and community and our changing climate. Experimenting with materials is central to her practice as she uses Tyvek (a plastic paper) to create sculptural wall collages, drawings and paintings. Her wall sculptures depict disheveled, broken surfaces where Tyvek painfully peels away like paint or skin, exposing a raw inner core. Everyday objects become precious; their bits and pieces are incorporated into the work and become signifiers of the lost reassurance of a safe and intact home. A former surgeon, she also has a collection of work focusing on the human body and its seemingly mysterious anatomy. Her art brings the human narrative and a subtle bit of humor to some very serious subject matter. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
