Born in New York City and educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Cooper Union, and Bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt; Donald Baechler was a key member of the East Village art scene in the 1980s. "Donald Baechler's seemingly ingenuous depictions of everyday objects and simple figures succeed in large part by tapping into our nostalgia for childhood, that period of life before the rivening onset of self-consciousness and guilt. It's a myth, of course: children are hardly angelic, and alienation is the state of humanity — while Beachler's art works hard to achieve its trademark appearance of prelapsarian sincerity and artlessness," writes Steven Vincent for "Art in America." Known for his drawings, paintings, and collages, Baechler is often associated with other East Village artists, including Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf.

- Janus, Botanical Watercolor & Gouache on Paper, 2 Bud Vases with Purple FlowersBy Christina HaglidLocated in Chicago, ILTwo bud vases seemingly defy gravity as they teeter upon a watery surface in Christina Haglid's "Janus". This meticulously detailed watercolor invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. Intricate in her execution, Haglid uses watercolor as one might use a colored pencil. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night...Category

- Flowers II, 2020, Mary Finlayson, Gouache on Paper- Floral/Still Life/BlackBy Mary FinlaysonLocated in 326 N Coast Hwy. | Laguna Beach, CAMary Finlayson Flowers II Gouache on Paper 22.5 x 17 inches, framed Mary Finlayson’s interest in painting interior spaces portrays how environments reveal identity. Navigating the themes of intimacy, memory, and self, Finlayson’s gouache paintings reflect the vulnerable narratives unveiled through ownership of possessions. Flattening the perspective of each scene, her still lifes provide a voyeuristic glimpse in to each curated space. Considering the personal attachments and importance of objects, her compositions skew and distort to capture the feeling of a space rather than an accurate depiction. Rendered with vivid color and an emphasis on texture, Finlayson creates spaces that are partly real and partly imagined. Mary Finlayson lives and works in San Francisco as an artist, teacher, and art therapist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy...Category
