Scott Nelson Foster
Coca Cola (Photo-Realist Watercolor Pop Art Painting of Crushed Red Soda Can)

2017

About the Item

Scott Nelson Foster Coca Cola, 2017 29" X 21 1/2" watercolor on paper 39 x 29 inches framed Wire backing for seamless hanging Pop-Art meets Photo Realism in this wonderful still life painting of a bright red Coca-Cola soda can by Troy based artist, Scott Nelson Foster. Painted with watercolor, the twisted can sets against a subtly gradated background in a larger than life scale. The painting was custom framed by the artist in a black frame with white mat board. About the artist and work: Realist painter Scott Nelson Foster is best known for his black and white, monochromatic photo realist scenes of neighborhoods in small town America. Perfectly straight lines provide a stunning depth of perception, while calculated detail resemble that of a drawing or photograph. Absence and loss, not presence, shapes my definition of beauty. An aspect of this conception of beauty is memory, the anticipation of change, and the struggle to fix a moment in the mind. I use the suburban landscape of houses and strip malls as my subject matter. I search for ways to describe the changes of the landscape and the passage of time; to express the long memories tied to the land and sky that surround us. Artist Statement: My paintings are reflections of changing ideas about the American experience, the American dream, and societal relationships to the land. The suburban landscape is an arena in which many different dramas of the American dream are played out. Houses, subdivisions, and strip-malls evoke shared experiences. This common denominator gives my work a broad resonance that allows even fragmentary visions to evoke complex narratives. My watercolors and oils eschew the particulars—what makes a location unique—and focus on the iconic—what makes disparate subjects universal.

"Sweet Gum" painted by Joy Taylor in 2022 28 x 22 inches, 37 x 29 inches framed acrylic on paper Custom Frame with White Wood Molding, Window Mat and Tru Vu AR Glass Joy Taylor’s paintings transform botany into a personal vision. Her recent series on canvas, playfully titled the “Boo-K” paintings, defy traditional still life depictions that often seek to tame and order the objects of the world. On the contrary, Taylor’s subjects are never still. Her floral forms have the crisp, clean qualities of cut paper; sharp, decisive lines slice through blocks of pure pigment to create defined edges of leaves, vines and blossoms. The colors are constructed as well as the form. Her exuberant palette of oranges, blues, magenta and green echo the complimentary colors favored by the Fauvists. Color is an element in and of itself in her work. This balance of sparkling color and form is irrepressible, at times disconcerting and even dangerous in its boldness. In a series of original paintings on paper, Joy pairs down the form by focusing on a single bloom or leaf. As a specimen under a microscope, Taylor dives into the crevices and details of each leaflet on this bright green Sweet...

  • Flowers II, 2020, Mary Finlayson, Gouache on Paper- Floral/Still Life/Black
    By Mary Finlayson
Located in 326 N Coast Hwy. | Laguna Beach, CA
Mary Finlayson Flowers II Gouache on Paper 22.5 x 17 inches, framed Mary Finlayson’s interest in painting interior spaces portrays how environments reveal identity. Navigating the themes of intimacy, memory, and self, Finlayson’s gouache paintings reflect the vulnerable narratives unveiled through ownership of possessions. Flattening the perspective of each scene, her still lifes provide a voyeuristic glimpse in to each curated space. Considering the personal attachments and importance of objects, her compositions skew and distort to capture the feeling of a space rather than an accurate depiction. Rendered with vivid color and an emphasis on texture, Finlayson creates spaces that are partly real and partly imagined. Mary Finlayson lives and works in San Francisco as an artist, teacher, and art therapist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy...
