Tribute to Morandi #30

2018

About the Item

Bob Stuth-Wade: Tribute to Morandi, 2018 "Life is what happens while I'm thinking of something else." "Driving. Listening to the radio. Talking on the phone. Thinking of where I'm going and where I've been. All at the same time. By multitasking I can consume a lot of life's experiences without actually tasting any of them and then wonder why I'm always hungry for more." "In the evenings in a small corner of a small blue room I take out a 4 x 7 metal box that contains a reservoir, pallet and storage area for brushes. This is how I use it but it was made in the 1800s for a purpose I have not been able to discover. Sitting on a chaise lounge facing a shelf covered with a blue green cloth I begin another meditation on shells. Like the shapes of a woman's body they seem to be the reason for light and vision. Wanda sometimes reads, sleeps or we talk while I paint. The colors are limited to gray, black and white. The rules of this game are simple. See, experience, paint, experience, see, paint... When the painting is finished it goes into the book of Morandi's paintings. One of my paintings between each two pages of the book. His game was played with bottles. The rules were similar. This is my tribute to him and also a way of becoming more and more willing to eat this meal of Life tasting each moment completely." "There is something in the repetition of an act. A fairy tale or a mantra gathers meaning with each telling. Every morning, after breakfast I clear the table and set up a still life of shells, flowers in a bottle and a very realistic model of an elephant. Drawing with a fountain pen every flaw in concentration is revealed as a flaw in the line. On a good day the ink flows out clean and clear following the contours of the objects. It is this unsegmented moment expressed as line. Doing this every day with different arrangements of the same objects is freeing me from preciousness. Breathing is a precious thing but it is the continuity of breath that is important." "I am less and less attached to each drawing and painting. It is continuity that is important." "Going to the studio or into the field after drawing practice my hands seem to know what needs to be done. I am developing the habit of concentrated abandon. This relates to my tribute to Morandi. Objects become beloved by attention and attention to the beloved continues. Through this daily practice I am learning the life principle that to see is to love."
