Harry Solon
Early 20th century Portrait Study, 'Mrs. Washburne', Washington Socialite

1931

$1,425

About

Signed lower right, 'Harry Solon' (American, 1873-1958) and dated 1931. Accompanied by an original photograph of the artist's oil portrait of the sitter, painted in 1923, and bearing the hand-written dedication "To Mrs. Washburne, Souvenir of a very agreeable voyage in D.C., Harry Solon, 1931." A bravura portrait of the Washington socialite shown three-quarter on and gazing at the viewer with humor and candor. This charming and intimate study shows both the artist's characteristically intuitive hand and his talent for psychological penetration. Born in San Francisco, "Harry" Solon first studied at the San Francisco School of Design under Virgil Williams and Emil Carlsen and, later, at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then painted for fifteen years in San Francisco before moving to France in 1899. He continued his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian and, subsequently, with Henri Royer and Richard Miller. He returned to San Francisco for the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915 and, in 1929, moved to New York City where he lived and painted for the remainder of his career. Solon exhibited internationally with success including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Academie Julian the San Francisco Art Institute and the Capitol in Washington D.C. and, over the course of a long career, was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards.
