About

Louis Latapie (1891-1972) is a French painter and engraver. His work develops, through still lifes and feminine nudes, to the limits of a strongly colored cubism. In the 1950s the simplification of forms brought him closer to abstraction. Louis Latapie studied at Janson-de-Sailly High School in Paris. Drawing since childhood, he enrolled in 1910 at the School of Fine Arts. He attended the classes of Jean-Paul Laurens but also attended the Académie Julian and 1911 Academy Ranson where he discovered with Paul Sérusier the research of cubism. After performing his military service in Albi, Louis Latapie is mobilized in 1914. Throughout ten campaigns, he is struck by three wounds, receiving two citations. Regaining his studio in 1920, he became a professor at the Ranson Academy, married Estelle Isch-Wall (marriage which in 1922 will be born son Jean-Louis, godson of Georges Braque), meeting Max Jacob, Roger Bissiere, Jean Metzinger, Jacques Villon , and presents from 1922 his first exhibitions. In 1923 Georges Braque, Bissière, Ozenfant and Latapie formed the "Beavers of Montsouris" association to build original houses of cubic structure. After the brutal disappearance of his wife the same year, Louis Latapie settled in 1925 in Toulon. There he meets Juan Gris and founds a painting academy. Returning to Paris in 1927, resumed his courses at the Ranson Academy and, like Marie Vassilieff, Jean Lombard, Maurice Savin and Jules-Émile Zingg, painted a canvas that he himself fixed on Montparnasse, one of the pillars of the famous brewery La Coupole then under construction. In 1930 he moved back to Toulon, continuing to give some classes in Paris. While working on a 40 m2 mural for the new Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Boulogne-Billancourt, Latapie was mobilized again in 1939 and returned to Paris in 1940. In 1951, several tapestries were executed after his cartoons by the manufactures of Beauvais and Goblins. After two solo exhibitions in Paris in 1954 and 1956, his painting moves towards abstraction. In the 1960s, Louis Latapie created several mosaics for schools in Melun and Laval. He moved in 1968 to Avignon. While preparing in 1971 for the 25th Festival d'Avignon an exhibition in two rooms of the Palais des Papes, his second wife died a few days before the opening. His works are in the museums of: Aups, Avignon, Cabourg, Dunkirk, Geneva, Issoire, Paris. This drawing dates from the twenties and must appear in the catalog raisonné of the artist. The theme of Leda and the swan is remarkably treated here, with tenderness, sensitivity and sensuality. The trait is assured and powerful.
