Albert Lebourg
Rotterdam

1897

About the Item

Albert Lebourg participated in the fourth and fifth Impressionist Exhibitions of 1879 and 1880. The first of these exhibitions included: Caillebotte, Cassatt, Degas, Lebourg, Monet and Pissarro; while the second included: Caillebotte, Cassatt, Degas, Guillaumin, Lebourg, Morisot and Pissarro. Lebourg made two voyages to Holland. The first of these was in the fall and winter of 1895-1896. In those months, the artist explored the cities of Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft and Dordrecht. He also spent a great deal of time studying the Dutch countryside with its canals, boats and windmills. When he returned from Holland, Lebourg presented a solo exhibit at the Galerie Mancini in Paris. Most of the works shown had been executed in Holland. Lebourg’s second stay in Holland was in the summer of 1897. It was during the latter trip that Lebourg executed a series of watercolors including this one. In one of his notes from Holland in those months, Lebourg writes (see: François Lespinasse, "Albert Lebourg" [Rouen, 1983], p. 125):: "I have been doing watercolors... it is a way of executing drawings from which one can more effectively create paintings ... What a wonderful thing is a watercolor brush with which one can create a line, as fine as that of an ink drawing, or a broad patch of color. This is the only way... to draw in this country [Holland] where everything appears to be so rapid and fleeting."
