Environmental Prognostication Coil Narrative "Homo Sapiens R.I.P."
Located in Miami, FL
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot," Joni Mitchell said. - - Created in 1969, at the dawn of the American environmental movement, artist Richard Erdoes draws a sequential narrative in the form of a coil. From inception to destruction, it illustrates a list of things that humans are doing to destroy the world we live in. The work was commissioned for school-age humans and executed in a whimsically comic way. Yet the underlying narrative is sophisticated and foreshadows a world that could be on the brink of ecological disaster. Graphically and conceptually, this work exhibits an endless amount of creativity and Erdoes cartoony style is one to fall in love with. Signed lower right. Unframed 12.4 inches Width: 12.85 inches Height is the live area. Board is 16x22 inches. Richard Erdoes (Hungarian Erdős, German Erdös; July 7, 1912 – July 16, 2008) was an American artist, photographer, illustrator and author. Early life Erdoes was born in Frankfurt,to Maria Josefa Schrom on July 7, 1912. His father, Richárd Erdős Sr., was a Jewish Hungarian opera singer who had died a few weeks earlier in Budapest on June 9, 1912.After his birth, his mother lived with her sister, the Viennese actress Leopoldine ("Poldi") Sangora,He described himself as "equal parts Austrian, Hungarian and German, as well as equal parts Catholic, Protestant and Jew..."[4] Career He was a student at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1933, when Adolf Hitler came to power. He was involved in a small underground paper where he published anti-Hitler political cartoons which attracted the attention of the Nazi regime. He fled Germany with a price on his head. Back in Vienna, he continued his training at the Kunstgewerbeschule, now the University of Applied Arts, Vienna.[5] He also wrote and illustrated children's books and worked as a caricaturist for Tag and Stunde, anti-Nazi newspapers. After the Anschluss of Austria in 1938 he fled again, first to Paris, where he studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, and then London, England before journeying to the United States. He married his first wife, fellow artist Elsie Schulhof (d. xxxx) in London, shortly before their arrival in New York City. In New York City, Erdoes enjoyed a long career as a commercial artist, and was known for his highly detailed, whimsical drawings. He created illustrations for such magazines as Stage, Fortune, Pageant, Gourmet, Harper's Bazaar, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, Time, National Geographic and Life Magazine, where he met his second wife, Jean Sternbergh (d. 1995) who was an art director there. The couple married in 1951 and had three children.[6] Erdoes also illustrated many children's books. An assignment for Life in 1967 took Erdoes to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for the first time, and marked the beginning of the work for which he would be best known. Erdoes was fascinated by Native American culture, outraged at the conditions on the reservation and deeply moved by the Civil Rights Movement that was raging at the time. He wrote histories, collections of Native American stories...

Odalisque
Located in Boxholm, SE
Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about the drawing: In my intimate drawings, I capture what is closest to me – the private moments that I would hardly want to reveal. And yet, I choose to share them with my audience. The motif of the odalisque, a reclining woman, has long been a popular subject in art. Throughout history, numerous artists have embraced this theme, and some of their paintings depicting reclining women have become iconic, shaping the course of art in their respective eras. Art historians have extensively written about the influence of these works. Notably, the odalisques created by the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, such as his renowned piece “La Grande Odalisque...

"Figure Study" Rockwell Kent, American Modernism, Work on Paper
Located in New York, NY
Rockwell Kent Figure Study Estate stamped lower right Ink on paper 6 x 10 inches Rockwell Kent, though best known as an artist and illustrator, pursued many careers throughout his long life, including architect, carpenter, explorer, writer, dairy farmer, and political activist. Born in Tarrytown, New York, Kent was interested in art from a young age. These ambitions were encouraged by his aunt Jo Holgate, an accomplished ceramicist. Jo came to live with the family after Kent’s father passed away in 1887 and took him to Europe as a teenager. Kent attended the Horace Mann School in New York City, where he excelled at mechanical drawing. His family’s financial circumstances prevented him from pursuing career in the fine arts, however, and after graduating from Horace Mann in 1900, Kent decided to study architecture at Columbia University. Before matriculating at Columbia, Kent spent the first of three consecutive summers studying painting at William Merritt Chase’s art school in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island. There he found a community of mentors and fellow students who encouraged him to pursue his interest in art. At the end of Kent’s third summer at Shinnecock, Chase offered him a full scholarship to the New York School of Art, where he was a teacher. Kent began taking night classes at the art school in addition to his architecture studies, but soon left Columbia to study painting full time. In addition to Chase, Kent took classes with Robert Henri (American, 1865 - 1929) and Kenneth Hayes Miller (American, 1876 - 1952). His classmates included the artists George Bellows (American, 1882 - 1925) and Edward Hopper (American, 1882 - 1967). Kent spent the summer of 1903 assisting the painter Abbott Handerson Thayer (American, 1849 - 1921) at his studio in Dublin, New Hampshire—a position he secured through the recommendation of his Aunt Jo. Thayer gave the young artist time to pursue his own work, and that summer Kent painted several views of the New Hampshire landscape, including Mount Monadnock. In 1905 Kent moved from New York to Monhegan Island in Maine, home to a summer art colony, where he continued to find inspiration in the natural world. Kent soon found success exhibiting and selling his paintings in New York and in 1907 was given his first solo show at Claussen Galleries. The following year he married his first wife, Kathleen Whiting (Thayer’s niece), with whom he had five children. The couple divorced in 1924, and Kent married Frances Lee the following year. They in turn divorced after 15 years of marriage, and the artist then married Sally Johnstone. For the next several decades, Kent lived a peripatetic lifestyle, settling in several locations in Connecticut, Maine, and New York. During this time he took a number of extended voyages to remote, often ice-filled, corners of the globe, including Newfoundland, Alaska, Tierra del Fuego, and Greenland, to which he made three separate trips. For Kent, exploration and artistic production were twinned endeavors, and his travels to these rugged, rural locales provided inspiration for both his visual art and his writings. He developed a stark, realist landscape style in his paintings and drawings that revealed both nature’s harshness and its sublimity. Kent’s human figures, which appear sparingly in his work, often signify mythic themes, such as heroism, loneliness, and individualism. Important exhibitions of works from these travels include the Knoedler Gallery’s shows in 1919 and 1920, featuring Kent’s Alaska drawings...

“Dime a Dance” American Art Deco 20th Century Modernism Pin-Up Social Realism
Located in New York, NY
“Dime a Dance” American Art Deco 20th Century Modernism Pin-Up Social Realism Arthur Rosenman Ross (1913 - 1981) “Dime a Dance”, 1933 Watercolor and Ink on Illustration Board 18” x 10 1/2 inches (sight) Signed Arthur Rosenman, ‘33 L/R 29 1/2”H x 25 1/2 inches ( Framed) Provenance: Estate of the artist. The Drawing is in very good condition. The period frame is solid, but could use some restoration. BIO Arthur Rosenman Ross was a key figure in automotive design at General Motors during America's "Golden Age" of auto design, the 1930's through the 1950s. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago from age 17, exhibiting a special interest for automotive renderings and the female figure. In 1934, he changed his name from Rosenman to Ross, fearing his Jewish ancestry could prejudice his career prospects. At age 20, he turned down job offers from MGM Studios in Hollywood and Duesenberg to work at General Motors alongside the Legendary Harley Earl in 1935. He was hand picked by Mr. Earl and assigned to GM's War and Camouflage Division in 1937 through WW2. It was during this pivotal period in which he executed some extraordinary military aircraft artworks, likely used between GM and America's military aeronautics companies in design preparation for WW2. General Motors played an important role in helping America's aircraft manufacturers preceding and during the war. Just after the war in 1945, Mr. Ross was rewarded by GM, being made Chief Designer of Cadillac, then two years later becoming Chief at Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1959. He was in large part responsible for some of GM's classic Cadillac designs such as the Cadillac Sixty Special, Fleetwood, LaSalle and GM's first concept car, the extraordinary Buick Y-Job. Mr. Ross was an exceptionally charismatic and vivacious man who quite by chance, befriended His idol, Salvador Dali at GM in 1955. They talked about art, cars and girls late into the evening, according to his son, Carter Ross. He had a gift in rendering the erotic arts...

This intriguing and gentle piece will be of specific interest to those who have an interest in the British royal family and its history. A unique and very special painting, this charming delicate watercolour was painted by Princess Alice Mary Maud, of the House of Hanover, the second daughter of Queen Victoria. This is very significant because the artist is now the great- great grandmother of the current monarch, HM King Charles III. The artist herself was an extraordinary woman, the painting was created at a special time and place, and the subject of the painting is a mystery. The painting depicts a winged angel looking down at a small baby lying in a cradle. The angel holds a scroll, emblazoned with “Long life and happiness” A date, “June 8th, 1860”, is written clearly and prominently above the child, signifying a date of birth. The painting is signed simply “Alice” and the date of its completion is recorded as “June 11th, 1860.” The painting demonstrates that the young Princess, just 17 at the time, was an accomplished and sensitive artist. The work commemorates the birth 3 days earlier of a baby whose arrival must have been personally celebrated by the Princess. The identity of this child is a mystery. The fact that the cradle is decorated with blue ribbons and trimmings does not necessarily suggest that this is a male child as the custom of blue for a boy had not yet been adopted at this time. Princess Alice of the United Kingdom became Princess Louis and Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine by marriage. She was born on 25th April 1843 and was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Like her siblings she spent her early childhood in the company of her parents and siblings, travelling between the British royal residences. Her birth prompted her parents to purchase Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight, and for Alice this was very much her family home. Here, at her father’s insistence, she and her siblings learnt family values and practical skills such as housekeeping, cooking, gardening and carpentry. During the Crimean War Alice, aged just eleven, toured London hospitals with her mother and elder sister. This triggered her interest in health and public welfare which continued all her life. Alice was considered the most emotionally sensitive of her siblings and was genuinely sympathetic to the burdens of others. Her compassion meant that she took on the role of the family caregiver. She nursed her grandmother, Victoria, Duchess of Kent, mother to Queen Victoria, throughout her final illness, and provided emotional support for all the family after her death. As Alice reached adulthood Queen Victoria made plans for her to be married. Queen Victoria wanted her children to marry for love, but the choice of suitors was nevertheless severely restricted by protocol. After Alice rejected the first two potential suitors her mother and elder sister suggested Prince Louis of Hesse, a minor German royal who was heir to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. He and his brother were invited to Windsor Castle in 1860, ostensibly so that they could watch the Ascot Races in the company of the royal family. In reality, the visit was an opportunity for the Queen to inspect her potential son-in-law. Louis and Alice got on together well, and Alice made it clear that she was attracted to him. They became engaged the following year. The visit to Windsor Castle by the German Princes...

Mid Century Modern British 'Listeners' by British German illustrator Kapp, 1959
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Edmond Xavier Kapp (British, 1890 – 1978) Listeners Inkpen Signed, inscribed and date ‘Listeners / Kapp 59’ (lower left) 7.5/8 x 10.1/2 in. (19.4 x 26.7 cm.) Edmond Kapp was born in Islington, London, on 5 November 1890, of American and German Jewish parentage. He gave himself the middle initial ‘X’ – sometimes said to stand for Xavier – to distinguish himself from his father Emil Kapp, who was a wine merchant. However, his parents called him ‘Eddie’ while his wife and friends knew him as ‘Peter’. During his early years, Kapp was continually ill and, while convalescing, entertained himself by drawing at home. As his health improved, he attended Dame Alice Owen’s School, Islington (1903-10), with periods at Berlin University (1909) and L’Institut Français pour les Etrangers, Paris (1909). He then read Languages at Christ’s College, Cambridge (1910-13), though spent most of his time writing and drawing. Kapp took a studio in London, and worked intensively until the outbreak of the First World War, contributing to the Daily News, the Onlooker and other periodicals. During the war, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment on the Western Front, and then in Intelligence, rising to the position of Staff Captain on Haig’s Staff. Finally, he founded and directed the Neutral Press Counter-propaganda Section. In 1919, Kapp returned to London and, after abortive periods at three art schools, worked alone. In that year, he made his name with an exhibition of caricatures, held at Furst’s Gallery, London, and accompanied by a catalogue introduced by Max Beerbohm. This soon led to contracts with three London periodicals and a book of caricatures, Personalities, published by Martin Secker. Through the 1920s and 30s, his drawings of musicians and other personalities appeared in a wide variety of periodicals, most notably Time & Tide; were collected in further volumes; and were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries. He considered himself to be a ‘character-portraitist’, producing images of psychological not satirical power, and disliking the term ‘caricature’. Between the wars, Kapp developed other aspects of his artistic talents, the desire to study and the search for subject matter often taking him abroad. For instance, work at the British Academy, Rome, under Antonio Sciortino...
