About the Item

Fairy tales, Mixed media on paper, from the artist estate. actual size 19"x23" framed 34"x39" Impressionistic style watercolor, drawing, pastel on paper, from the artist Estate. DeWitt Lockman began painting at the age of four in Brooklyn. By the age of seven, his family had moved to New York, where he worked with the animal painter James H. Beard. He later studied with Nelson Bickford and William Sartain. He was in Europe, principally in France, England, and Holland, from 1891 to 1892 and again from 1901 to 1902. In the years between the two European trips, Lockman painted little, suffering from ill-health. Resuming his artistic activities in the early years of the century, Lockman also served in the Office of Naval Intelligence from 1917 to 1918. He married Evelyn Walker in 1946. Although his oeuvre also includes still life and animal pictures, Lockman was most successful as a portraitist, painting over 500 works in that genre. President Calvin Coolidge, General of the Armies John J. Pershing, and Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler numbered among his more prominent sitters. Lockman won numerous awards, including the Isaac N. Maynard portrait prize, at the National Academy in 1922, a gold medal at the New-York Historical Society for artistic achievement in 1933, and a gold medal from the Allied Artists of America. An active member of the art community, Lockman was an officer in many of the most important art organizations of his time. He was a founder and president of the National Association of Portrait Painters, a fellow in perpetuity and trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a trustee of the New-York Historical Society, a president of the Allied Artist of America. From 1923 to 1926, Lockman served on the National Academy's Council. He devoted time to various other organizations, including the Associates of the Art Commission of New York, the American Artists Committee of One Hundred, the Municipal Art Society, and the American Artists Professional League, and was chairman of the West Point civilian advisory committees on painting. After his death, the Academy's Council noted that Lockman was one of its "most honored members, one who contributed greatly to the Academy," citing "his fine leadership" (NAD archives, letter, Corresponding Secretary to Mrs. DeWitt Lockman, October 10, 1957). By Bertha Boynton Lum
    Located in Soquel, CA
Wedding Procession is a colored raised line woodcut, done in 1924 by Bertha Boynton Lum (American, 1869 – 1954) . The image measures 13-7/8 x 10-1/8". Raised line impression and painted by the artist, while living in China. Image 13.25"H x 8.75"W Sheet 14.75"H x 10.75" (approx) Signed Lower center in pencil "Bertha Lum" New acid free mat included. Bertha Lum was fascinated by the legends and mythology of the Orient and wrote extensively about them. These legends provided the subject matter for many of her works in woodcut. Bertha Boynton Lum was an American artist known for helping popularize the Japanese and Chinese woodblock print outside of Asia. In May 1869, Lum was born as Bertha Boynton Bull in Tipton, Iowa. Lum's father was Joseph W. Bull (1841–1923), a lawyer and her mother was Harriet Ann Boynton (1842–1925), a school teacher. Both of Lum's parents were amateur artists. Lum had a sister and two brothers, Clara, Carlton, and Emerson. Education and career: In 1890 she lived in Duluth and listed her occupation as artist. She enrolled in the design department of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1895. A few years later she studied stained glass with Anne Weston and attended the Frank Holme School of Illustration. From November 1901 to March 1902, she studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and was influenced by the Japanese techniques of Arthur Wesley Dow in his book Composition, which was published in 1899. Lum married Burt F. Lum, a corporate lawyer from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1903. They spent their seven-week honeymoon in Japan, where she searched for a print maker who could teach her the traditional ukiyo-e method. Toward the end of her stay in Japan, she found a shop that reproduced old prints. The shop sold her some woodcutting tools...
