About the Item

Alessandro Pigna (Italian, 1862-1919) "Caesar Provoked" c. 1890 Watercolor Signed Lower Left "APigna" Site Size: approx. 18 x 28.5 inches Framed Size: approx. 24 x 34.5 inches Alessandro Pigna Italian (1862-1919) The work of Alessandro Pigna, 19th Century Italian painter, focuses primarily with historical themes marked by an intense attention to detail. Pigna was greatly influenced by fellow Italian painters such as Alma Tadema, who also practiced in the late 19th Century. T The figures represented in "Caesar Provoked" move within a setting rich in detail, lending the work the air of theatrical drama in which the scene unfolds. Pigna meticulously renders the intricacies of the multi-tonal marble work, leopard rug, tufted crimson divan, and the liquescent drapery of the figure’s togas nascent to the Roman era of Caesar. Both the interior setting and positioning of figures reveal Pigna’s technical acumen and intimate knowledge of the history of ancient art and classical, academic composition. In 1883, Alessandro Pigna participated in the International Exhibition where he presented his painting Frigidarium, which garnered significant praise and acclaim.
