"De La Bataille Vol. 1, Homage a Leonard da Vinci, " signed by Claude Weisbuc

1978

About the Item

"De La Bataille Vol. I, Homage a Leonard de Vinci" is a graphite drawing by Claude Weisbuch. The artist signed the piece lower right. This piece depicts a jumping horse inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. 10" x 13 1/4" art 19" x 22" frame "Some important things to look for in evaluating an artist for such a position of honour are: an inventiveness of style, a prolific output, and a consistency of quality--Claude Weisbuch has all three. His style is unique with a color range that is rich and warm in tone, certainly equal to that of Rembrandt. The fluidity of line and creation of motion is even more vigorous than in the work of Daumier or Toulouse Lautrec. His creativeness in composition is awesome and seems to have infinite possibilities of variation and vision." - David Barnett Born: February 8, 1927 in Thionville, France Education: L' Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nancy (School of Fine Arts in Nancy, France)

  • "The Drowning of Brother Tony, " Original Pastel Drawing signed
    By Della Wells
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"The Drowning of Brother Tony" is an original pastel drawing on paper by Della Wells. The artist signed the piece in the lower right. In this pastel, an alligator-like creature with an African American child's head thrashes about in the water, upsetting the tiny boat pictured at left and causing the black figure on the lower right to drown. Another female black figure, straddling the alligator's tail, attempts to save Tony, but to no avail. Two open eyes appear in the picture: the alligator seems to clutch one and the other appears on the boat's sail. The alligator holds a pice of melon in his mouth and colorful fish populate the water and sky. Alligators reference Jim Crow caricatures in which black children are chased and eaten by alligators. The alligators are menacing and point to a deeply racist pictorial and real world. The eye represents the all-seeing eye of God...

    By Eric Meade-King
    Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
"Learnt to ride him gently up to his fences" by Eric Meade-King (1911-1987) signed by initials lower right in image, inscribed to lower margin in pencil graphite and ink on paper laid to thick card, unframed Image 9.75 x 13.0 inches, overall 11.25 x 13.25 inches A really lovely example of Meade-King's work in those happy days of the 1930's in Britain when a large portion of the population in England relished the heady summer days at country shows, competitive riding and all things sporting. The rider is depicted elegantly and Meade-King has achieved perfect lines in her steed at a gallop towards a fence. Marquees stand proudly in the background with flags fluttering in the breeze of a summer's day. This work forms part of a collection of similar drawings we currently hold by Meade-King. Ideal for a sporting themed interior. Eric Meade-King was a prolific artist of all things sporting and surrounding English country life. Studied at Westminster School of Art in London and benefited from tutelage by Lionel Edwards, whose artistic interests lay in the same subjects. Exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and was the subject of of a one-man exhibition at the Greatorex Galleries in 1937 and 1938 in London. The artist captured the mood of the country sporting circles at the time very nicely, exploring both the social element in addition to equine and ornithological studies. He also authored a book; "The Silent Horn - Summer Sketches of Horse...
