Rythme couleur - Sonia Delaunay, geometric, colors, abstract, original, modern

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) Rythme couleur 1962 gouache and charcoal on paper 41 x 38.5 cm signed ‘Sonia Delaunay’ (lower left); inscribed ‘F971’ (lower centre) Price: £58,000 GBP Provenance: Private collection, France Sale: Artcurial, 30 May 2012, lot 41 Private collection (acquired at the above sale) Notes: This work is registered under number SD 30 971 in the Pracusa Artisticas SA archives and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Jean Louis Delaunay and Richard Riss, dated 24 October 2019. Best known for her experimentation with colour theory, Sonia Delaunay's paintings of overlapping and intersecting planes of colour explore how tonal relationships might be used to create the illusion of depth and movement. Delaunay received great international recognition and became the first living female artist to exhibit at the Louvre in 1964 and was later awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1975. A mature example of Delaunay's unique and sensuous form of abstraction, Rythme couleur is a work that with its strong correlation of simple, bold, and dynamic pure colour forms, typifies Delaunay's powerful abstraction of the 1950s. By using colour in a bold, imaginative way and by employing simple geometric forms – the semi-circle, square, rectangle, and triangle - in conjunction with colour, she was able to suggest different depths of planes and a sense of movement in her work.

In this way Delaunay asserted, 'Colour, freed from its descriptive, literary use', can be 'grasped as such, in its own particular richness. The subject is of no importance; it can be hinted at, or else arise out of the coloured configuration itself. He who knows how to appreciate colour relationships, the influence of one colour on another, their contrasts and dissonances, is promised an infinitely diverse imagery. With colour comes the essential structural element of rhythm, which is based on numbers. Just as in written poetry, that which counts is not the mere juxtaposition of words, but the act of creation mysteriously provoking (or not provoking) emotion; so in colours, what counts is poetry, the mysterious inner vitality - emanating and communicating. At last we have hopes of a new language' (Sonia Delaunay quoted in J. Damase, Sonia Delaunay, Rhythms and Colours, London, 1972, pp. 275-6).
