Larry Zox
Larry Zox "Rotation"

About the Item

Larry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of abstraction in American art of the 20th century. He played an essential role in the Color Field discourse of the 1960s and 1970s. Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre. Zox moved to New York City and established his reputation by the mid 1960's. His studio was located on 20th Street and he was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz artists, bikers, and boxers. By the mid 1960s, Zox arrived at his characteristic style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns, which were often created on raw canvas. “Edmonton” is a quintessential example of his mastery of geometry and color. With a mathematical precision and a subtle approach, Zox flattened colorful triangular shapes onto graph paper. Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960s and early 70s are arguably the most important from his oeuvre. Fittingly he was the subject of a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1973. Today, his works are held in the collections of numerous museums including the Whitney, The MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan Museum. "Rotation" is a quintessential example of his mastery of geometry and color. A rich purple dominates this abstract drawing surrounded by trapezoids. To the 21st century viewer, this palette evokes an early 90s sensibility, however this work was created nearly 30 years prior, when such a presentation of color was radical rather than trendy. By Robert Motherwell
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) is one of the essential American abstract painters that radically defined post-war abstraction in New York City. Today, his work appears in museum collections around the world and is instantly recognizable for its boldness and black forms. His auction record was set in 2018 at $12.6 million USD. In addition to his impressive paintings, Motherwell is also revered as one of the most innovative and prolific printmakers of the 20th century. He was always searching for new techniques, whether at his own printmaking atelier, or collaborating with others, to expand his ideas and express his aesthetic. Created in 1980, "Paris Suite...

Larry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of 20th century abstraction in America. Zox was one of the most successful practitioners of hard-edge or geometric abstraction and not surprisingly was championed by Frank Stella, amongst others. By the mid 1960's, Zox arrived at his most recognized style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns, which were often realized on raw canvas. Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960's and early 1970's are arguably the most recognizable works from his oeuvre. Fittingly he had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1973, that focused on such work. Today, numerous museums including the Whitney, the MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan all have examples of his work from this era in their permanent collections. While Zox is not directly associated with the Op Art movement, many of his works by nature of their patterns and colors create visual illusions in dimensionality. In "Mosaic" the kelly green band that intersect the composition helps give the overall work an appearance of a slanted stair. Frequently the artist seems to be inviting the viewer to find pattern within the work. In "Mosaic" we have both areas of synergy and dissonance. Can you find them? Questions about this piece?
