Ground Floor Gallery is pleased to present, “Barbara Marks: The Drawings,” the second in a two-part exhibition investigating the artist’s recent oeuvre: an extensive body of work created close to home—coastal Connecticut and New York City—and farther afield at artist residencies in Wyoming, Los Angeles, Georgia, Florida, and southern France. Rooted primarily in observation—with a nod to memory and make-believe—Marks’ drawings are far from sketches; they are expressive and complete works of art in and of themselves. Each drawing serves as an entry in the artist’s visual diary-as-archive. The 10-foot-long accordion albums compel the viewer to gradually examine each narrative as it unfolds, revealing select details of a particular time and place. Intimate in perspective and, often times, in subject matter, these smaller-scale, ink-on-paper compositions demonstrate how Marks coerces a simple black line into a vocabulary of exceptionally voluminous and lifelike forms. Her voracious eye consumes the entirety of her surroundings that Marks then distills into the most essential with a relaxed but deliberate use of line and, sometimes, color. Whether wielding her signature extra-superfine black Indian ink pen on the continuous page(s) of a Moleskin Japanese album or on a small, square, block of watercolor paper, Marks effortlessly captures myriad elements in the course of her nomadic practice—islands and clouds in coastal Connecticut; rock outcrops and undulating pasture-land in the high plains of southern Wyoming; a mature tree growing in a median strip in the built environment of Los Angeles; or, simply, a vase on a kitchen counter or - her view while waiting in line at the DMV.
