"Untitled Abstraction" Pen and Ink Drawing Black and White Greyscale Geometric

About the Item

Abraham Walkowitz (1878 -1965) Abraham Walkowitz was a Russian-born American artist who arrived in New York in 1889 and who went to Paris in 1906 where he met the Steins and the leaders of the avant-garde, as well as famed dancer Isadora Duncan in Rodin’s studio. The meeting was electric. Isadora became the subject of many now famous watercolors, whose fluid gestures drawn in pen and ink led directly to this extraordinary series of early 1930s linear abstractions discovered in the artist’s NY studio 60 years later, and first exhibited in Beth Urdang’s Boston gallery in 1993. ‘Boston Globe’ critic, Cate McQuaid, wrote of that exhibition: “The center of Urdang’s show... is a rare, recently discovered cache of small ink-wash drawings, all from 1930-33. Some have never been shown before; all are not to be missed. Although reminiscent of Walkowitz’s well-known abstractions of New York made in the teens….these highly rhythmic, strongly linear drawings are more purely nonrepresentational….they deserve to be counted among Walkowitz’s best. Although complex in form and texture, and without a specific focus, they are governed by an extremely satisfying visual cohesion. They hold an important connection to past, present, and future art. With their lively diagonals they bear a vibrant relationship to Kandinsky, and their circular forms suggest a dialogue with Walkowitz’s contemporary Arthur Dove. Most startling is the way their overallness forecasts Pollock’s biomorphic drawings and drip paintings of the late ‘40s and ‘50s.” Jackson Pollock knew Walkowitz and did visit the artist’s studio in the late 1940s, where he no doubt would have seen this series of pen and inks. Historians have considered the influence they may well have had on his thinking about overall abstraction and gesture. Upon his return from Paris in 1907 Abraham Walkowitz went on to become a protégé of Alfred Stieglitz, who welcomed him into his inner circle of early American modernists centered in Stieglitz’s famed 291 gallery where the artist had his first NY exhibition in 1912.
