About

This tender and loving depiction of a mother holding the hands of her young son was sculpted by Sir Charles Wheeler, one of Great Britain's greatest early to mid-20th century sculptors, and is a very fine example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Greek and Etruscan sources. Wheeler was highly successful in obtaining commissions for public monuments and sculpture for building facades in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. He was responsible for the great bronze doors and a myriad of other sculptures for the Bank of England headquarters in London, as well as the western fountain populated by mermen and dolphins in Trafalgar Square.
